Why Choose Our Cyber First-Grade Program?

Choosing a cyber charter school doesn't mean learning in isolation. PA Virtual first graders get individualized attention from a PA-certified teacher, along with in-person events throughout the year, like field days and school celebrations, that bring our online classroom together face-to-face. It's the personal attention of a small classroom with the flexibility of learning from home.

PA Virtual has been teaching first graders since 2001, and some of those early students now have their own children enrolled with us. With an average of 17 students per teacher, your child gets to know their classmates rather than just sitting in a virtual room with them.

Cyber First-Grade by Subject

Language Arts

Reading starts with the fundamentals: phonics, handwriting, and vocabulary, taught through live instruction rather than just worksheets on a screen. Your child works through hands-on activities and picks their own reading materials, so lessons stay engaging even in a virtual classroom. And if you have a child in our async model, where they have the flexibility to work at their own pace, you still get the same support and care from our teachers who've been recognized among Pennsylvania's best.

Mathematics

Your child will build a strong foundation in place value, addition, and subtraction, extending number sense up to 100 and developing fluency with number facts and problem-solving skills. And if your child is in our async model, they get the same curriculum and support from teachers who've been recognized among Pennsylvania's best, working at their own pace. Beyond the basics, students explore money, telling time, measurement, and ordering events, and begin working with geometric figures, patterning, and data literacy.

Science

Your child will build observation skills through hands-on experiments, learning to record what they see and think like a scientist. Topics include matter, weather, animal habitats and adaptation, the oceans, light, plants, and the human body.

History

Our History course takes first-graders on a journey from the Stone Age to the Space Age, introducing world geography and big-picture concepts like economics and citizenship along the way. Throughout the course, students will also learn about important concepts in economics and citizenship.

Art

Art is a self-paced subject, giving your child the flexibility to explore creatively at their own speed. Students discover art and architecture from cultures such as ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and China, learning to identify landscapes, portraits, and the elements of art: line, shape, and texture, before creating their own pieces, with a dedicated teacher always available for guidance and feedback.

Music

Music is a self-paced subject, giving your child the flexibility to explore at their own speed. Through activities like focused listening, singing, dancing, and playing instruments, students build foundational music skills, with a dedicated teacher always available for guidance and feedback.

A Safe & Nurturing Online Learning Environment

Your child is learning from home - already one of the safest places for a first grader to be. On top of that, we monitor attendance and classroom chat closely: students can't message each other privately, so every conversation stays visible to a teacher. And because starting school brings many new feelings, we have a counselor dedicated to elementary students, ready to help your first grader work through them.

Community still happens in a virtual classroom. First graders take part in group work, clubs, and outings throughout the year, and if a student is too shy to ask a question in front of the class, they can always message their teacher privately for help. No question goes unanswered.

Parents as Learning Partners

At PA Virtual, parents serve as their child's learning coach — and at this age, that role matters more than you might expect. Our teachers can see when a student is struggling during class, but they can't see what happens at home, like a 30-minute assignment stretching into three hours. First graders also aren't always able to fully explain what they're stuck on, so having you nearby to help them stay on task, work through frustration, and finish assignments makes a real difference.

Being a learning coach also means staying connected with your child's teacher — checking in on grades, collaborating on progress, and letting us know if your child could use extra support, like tutoring. Together, we can catch small struggles before they become big ones.

And just like school is new for your little one, cyber school is new to you too. That's why we support learning coaches with resources like Parent Ambassadors, our Friday Lunch & Learn series, and new family onboarding. At PA Virtual, we're here for your whole family — not just your student.
